Sorry, Kris Jenner. Tyga thinks he is the mastermind behind Kylie Jenner’s successful career.
The 28-year-old rapper, who dated the Kylie on-and-off for two years, recently opened up about his highly publicized relationship with the Keeping Up with the Kardashians star. Speaking to Nicki Minaj on her Queen Radio show on Beats 1, Tyga took credit for his ex’s popularity and proclaimed that it’s a “big fact” he put her on the map.
“She always had a platform, and she was always destined to be where she was going to be, regardless,” he said. “But, when I stepped in, and there was a lot of codes being taught, it was like, ‘You could do this. You should start this. You should start doing your hair like this, or you should do this. You should adapt because you need black people to f**k with you ‘cause you need culture. If you ain’t got black people behind you, you ain’t got nothing — ain’t nobody going to listen. You can’t influence nobody.’ So, I had a lot to do with all that.”
The “Rack City” hitmaker even went as so far as to claim that he helped Kylie — who is on track to be one of the youngest billionaires in America at just 21 — come up names for lipstick shades in her Kylie Cosmetics line.
“I had a lot to do with all that, which I don’t need credit for. I don’t need to go online and tell people, ‘I did this’ and ‘I’m the one helping her coming up with these colors and names on her … lip line,” he said.
“It was a lot of stuff. But I’m not that bitter type of person because God’s gonna pay me back, the universe is gonna pay me back,” he added. “People are seeing what’s happening now, so I’m not a bitter person. If we break up, we break up. We keep moving. We went our separate ways and we’re both doing good.”
As Celebuzz! previously reported, Tyga was rumored to have started dating the makeup mogul back when she was still underage. The couple went public with their relationship on Kylie’s 18th birthday when she had turned the age of consent.
After several brief breakups, the two called it quits one last time in early 2017. Soon after, Kylie started dating Travis Scott, with whom she shares 6-month-old daughter Stormi Webster.
When asked about his feelings towards Kylie’s current boyfriend, Tyga said, “We aint got no beef.”
On a past episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kylie also insinuated that the breakup was an amicable one.
“There was absolutely not one thing wrong with me and T,” she revealed. “Him and I will always, always have a bond. There was no crazy fight, we just decided—well, I decided that I’m really young. I don’t want to look back in five years from now and feel like he took something from me when he’s really not that type of person.”
While Kylie may not have bad blood with Tyga, many of her fans weren’t too happy with her former beau taking credit for her success. Many took to social media to blast the “Stimulated” emcee, pointing out that Tyga has faced a string of financial problems since his relationship with the starlet.
“Tyga knows how to build Kylie’s career but not his own? Lol yeah ok mr. rack city go get your car out of the repo,” @prestonprod tweeted, referencing the time Tyga’s car seemingly got repossessed while on a date with Kylie.
“Wow okay, so this is the best thing I’ve ever heard,” @liamkardash wrote. “Did anyone really even know who Tyga was before he got with Kylie??? I knew he had that one song ‘Rack City’ but that is all.”
“TYGA thinks he helped put KYLIE JENNER on the map LOL THIS IS THE FUNNIEST NEWS I’VE EVER SEEN. i needed a good laugh before bed wow,” @shanniepanties_ quipped. “Imagine having $5 and thinking ur responsible for making someone a billionaire. men are delusional.”
Some fans also called out the questionable start to Tyga’s romantic relationship with Kylie, pointing out that she was still a teenager when he started dating her.
“Something about this interview with him trying to take responsibility for her success along with the fact that she was a child when they started dating tells me a lot more about Tyga and Nicki than Kylie,” @ autumnsvanity noted in a tweet.
“Tyga said he made Kylie.. I don’t know if that lowkey makes him look weird.. she was a minor bro.. a minor,” @kingdom_lady91 highlighted.
However, people did think Tyga had a point about Kylie and cultural appropriation.
“When Tyga said he built Kylie Jenner into the black cultural appropriator she is today … I died,” @AriesKree tweeted.
“If it wasn’t for Tyga, we wouldn’t know Kylie,” @ _TheRealCarlieB wrote.
